Dinner with Socrates

April 2, 2008

I was tempted to make a dash down to Oxford yesterday for this TLS debate – for four reasons: I studied at Oxford and it’s always nostalgic to visit; having suffered through Plato’s Apology last semester, I’m on nodding terms with Socrates; Mary Beard is a Classics don who speaks her mind, which is entertaining; and I always like a bit of classics to liven up my working week, till I can get back to studying. I didn’t make it – instead spending the evening reviewing a slide pack on capital expenditure, which was less than riveting. But I’m looking forward to catching up via the podcast.

These podcasts are great – the last one I listened to was Beard v. Hall on Romans v. Greeks - a fascinating display of rhetoric in action. I’m pleased to report that the Greeks won.
