Idyllic, Iliadic

April 5, 2008

Few things could be more pleasurable than reading through the Iliad (in translation, sadly) – not for an essay, not looking for instances of divine intervention or betrayal of the heroic code, but just for pleasure and the plot. Though my copy of Lattimore will never be the same again after a tea-spilling incident; my Liddell & Scott sees more service as a book-press than as a dictionary. It’s just as well I’m not involved in any undertaking that requires hand-eye co-ordination, physical ability, that kind of thing, given the trouble I’m having simultaneously reading and drinking tea.
